Active supervision in early learning: what every Jelly Tots family should know

Active supervision childcare

When choosing an early learning Centre, families want confidence that their child is not only safe, but genuinely supported throughout the day. At Jelly Tots Early Learning Centres, safety is never passive. It is intentional, responsive and woven into every moment of a child’s experience.

This is where active supervision plays a vital role. Understanding what active supervision means, why it matters, and how it is practiced can help families feel reassured and informed when choosing care for their child.

What is active supervision in early learning

Active supervision is a proactive approach to keeping children safe and supported. It means educators are fully engaged, observing, listening and interacting with children at all times. Rather than standing back or being distracted by tasks, educators position themselves thoughtfully, scan the environment continuously and anticipate what children may need next.

At Jelly Tots, active supervision is part of our daily rhythm. Educators are present in play, learning and routines, building relationships with children while remaining alert to changes in behaviour, movement or emotional cues. This approach supports both physical safety and emotional wellbeing.

Active supervision is also a regulatory requirement under Quality Area 2 of the National Quality Standard, which focuses on children’s health and safety. You can learn more about the National Quality Framework via ACECQA here.

How environments support active supervision at Jelly Tots

A well-designed environment plays a key role in effective supervision. Our Jelly Tots Centres in South Yunderup and Mundijong are purpose built to support visibility, connection and calm movement throughout the day.

Learning spaces are arranged to allow clear sightlines, with furniture and resources positioned thoughtfully so educators can see and respond to children easily. Indoor and outdoor environments are reviewed regularly as part of our risk management processes, ensuring hazards are identified early and addressed promptly.

Supervision plans are adjusted throughout the day to reflect transitions, group sizes and play experiences. During outdoor play or busier times, educators rotate positions to ensure children remain supported wherever they choose to engage.

The role of educators in active supervision

At Jelly Tots, our educators are central to creating a safe and nurturing environment. All team members hold current Working with Children Checks and are trained in child safety, first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis management.

Educators actively supervise by staying close to children, engaging in play, listening for changes in tone or behaviour and stepping in early when support is needed. This includes guiding safe risk-taking, such as climbing or balancing, while remaining nearby to assist if required.

Active supervision also means supporting emotional safety. Educators watch for signs of fatigue, frustration or discomfort and respond with reassurance, redirection or rest when needed. Children are supported to regulate emotions, build resilience and feel secure within predictable routines.

Why active supervision matters for children

Children thrive when they feel safe, seen and supported. Active supervision creates an environment where children are free to explore and learn, knowing trusted adults are nearby.

Consistent supervision supports positive social interactions, reduces the risk of injury and helps children develop confidence in their environment. It also strengthens relationships between children and educators, which is a key foundation for learning under the Early Years Learning Framework.

At Jelly Tots, our play-based programs are guided by EYLF principles of belonging, being and becoming. Active supervision ensures children can engage fully in learning experiences while feeling secure and supported.

Our commitment to child safety

Child safety is a shared responsibility at Jelly Tots. Our services maintain a strong commitment to child safe practices, aligned with the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and relevant state legislation.

We have clear policies and procedures in place to minimise risk, respond to concerns and ensure all children are protected from harm. Educators act as mandatory reporters and participate in ongoing professional learning to keep child protection knowledge current.

Families are encouraged to speak openly with Centre Managers if they ever have questions or concerns. Strong communication between families and educators helps us work together in the best interests of every child.

What families can expect at Jelly Tots

Families visiting a Jelly Tots Centre will notice educators positioned throughout learning spaces, actively engaging with children rather than standing back. You will see educators on children’s level, participating in play, guiding interactions and maintaining calm, attentive supervision throughout the day.

You can also expect open communication. Through the Xplor app and daily conversations, families are kept informed about their child’s day, routines and wellbeing.

If you ever have questions about supervision, safety practices or how we support your child, our Centre Managers and educators are always happy to talk.

See active supervision in action

Active supervision is not a single policy or checklist. It is part of how we care, teach and connect with children every day at Jelly Tots.

If you would like to see our approach in action, we invite you to book a tour of your local Jelly Tots Centre, meet our educators and experience our learning environments firsthand.

What are the legal requirements for active supervision in childcare?

Active supervision is a requirement under the National Quality Framework, particularly Quality Area 2, which focuses on children’s health and safety. At Jelly Tots, we follow the National Quality Standard, National Regulations and the Early Years Learning Framework to ensure children are supervised at all times in a way that supports their safety, wellbeing and learning.

At Jelly Tots, active supervision is part of every routine. Educators position themselves intentionally, continuously observe children, listen for changes in behaviour or environment, and stay engaged in play and learning experiences. Supervision plans are reviewed and adjusted throughout the day to reflect transitions, group sizes and different learning spaces, including indoor and outdoor areas.

Educator to child ratios are set by national regulations and vary depending on a child’s age. Jelly Tots complies with these ratios at all times to ensure children are adequately supervised. Ratios are calculated across the service, allowing educators to respond flexibly to children’s needs while maintaining safe and effective supervision.

All Jelly Tots educators hold valid Working with Children Checks and complete regular training in child safety, first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis management. Educators receive ongoing professional development to strengthen their supervision practices, support children’s wellbeing and ensure compliance with current legislation and best practice.

Active supervision helps children feel safe, secure and confident in their environment. When educators are present, attentive and engaged, children are more likely to explore, build friendships and participate fully in learning experiences. Active supervision also supports emotional wellbeing, as educators can respond quickly to children’s needs, comfort them when required and guide positive social interactions.

This approach builds confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning while supporting early literacy, numeracy, and social development.

Proudly part of the Mundijong community

Community is at the heart of who we are. As one of the few local early learning centres in Mundijong, we’re proud to play a meaningful role in our growing town.

What we learned

This month has been filled with creativity, exploration, and lots of fun across all our learning spaces! Our Barnyard room has been especially busy, bringing their imaginative ideas to life with the creation of their very own Barnyard Café. The children have loved taking on different roles from chefs to customers as they served up pretend coffees, cakes, and treats, encouraging rich conversations, cooperation, and imaginative play.

We’ve also been diving into a world of sensory exploration, with a variety of engaging sensory trays that have supported curiosity, fine motor skills, and hands-on learning. From squishy textures to natural materials, the children have loved discovering new sensations and sharing their observations.

Adding to the excitement, the children have been fascinated by our stick insects and the arrival of our very own bunnies! The children have shown such gentle care and curiosity, learning about responsibility, empathy, and the importance of looking after living things.

It’s been a month full of wonder, discovery, and joy and we can’t wait to see what adventures next month brings at Jelly Tots Mundijong.

What we learned

October has been a month full of fun, learning, and meaningful celebrations here at the centre! 🎉 We enjoyed exploring, creating, and reflecting with the children as we celebrated the following special days:

World Smile Day 😊 – We encouraged kindness and positivity, sharing smiles and kind words with our friends and educators. It was wonderful to see so many happy faces throughout the day!

World Mental Health Day 🧠💛 – The children engaged in activities to express their feelings, learn about emotions, and understand the importance of looking after their mental wellbeing.

Bird Week 🐦 – Our little explorers observed and learned about different birds, their sounds, and habitats. We also created some beautiful bird-themed art and crafts.

Food Day 🍎🥕 – The children learned about healthy eating and different types of foods. We had fun tasting, sorting, and discussing our favourite fruits, vegetables, and snacks.

Grandparents Day 👵🧓💖 – We celebrated the special bond between children and their grandparents. The children enjoyed creating cards and crafts to show their love and appreciation.

It’s been a joy to see the children engaging with these celebrations and learning in a playful, hands-on way. Thank you for your continued support in helping us make these experiences meaningful and memorable.

This week we are so excited to shine our Spotlight on someone truly special — Alarna!

Many of you already know Alarna as our wonderful cook, who fills our centre with the most delicious smells and nourishing meals every single day. What you might not know is that Alarna has also recently taken on a new role as an educator, and she is already bringing her warmth, creativity, and care into the classrooms as well!

Alarna is the kind of person who always goes above and beyond. She is the first to lend a helping hand, the one making sure everything runs smoothly, and the friendly face that brightens everyone’s day — children, families, and educators alike. Whether she’s whipping up a wholesome lunch, joining in on a group activity, or comforting a little one who needs some extra love, Alarna does it all with genuine passion and heart.

We feel so lucky to have Alarna as part of our team. Her dedication, kindness, and can-do attitude make such a positive difference in our centre every single day. Thank you, Alarna, for all that you do — for your care, your hard work, and the love you put into everything you do for our children and families. You are such an important part of our Jelly Tots family! 💛
